The Virginia Bikers Association (VABA) got its start after a benefit ride for Karen Goad, a dedicated motorcyclist from Hiawassee, VA, who had terminal cancer. This ride evolved to the annual Hilly Haven ride that benefits Saint Jude Kids.
We had several issues with discrimination against motorcycles in this area of the state. The handlebar height law had been amended, yet local police were attempting to issue tickets for too high handlebars. In addition, motorcyclists were being harassed for ambiguous exhaust and helmet infractions.
On August 6th, 2005 the Virginia Bikers Association became an official State Motorcycle Rights Organization (SMRO) by registering with the State Corporate Commission as a non-profit corporation.
Our objectives as a SMRO were to protect the rights of those who ride and to promote family oriented, fun motorcycle activities.
We participate in the Virginia motorcycle lobby day at the Capital in Richmond, VA every January. Last year, Delegate Ward Armstrong was a patron on VABA’s behalf for a bill allowing modulating brake lights, which up until this time had been illegal in our state. Modulating brake lights are much safer because they are more noticeable than a standard burning brake light. This bill passed on July 1, 2009.
We have worked hard on key motorcycle issues including license structures for motorcyclist, helmet statutes, rights for handicap motorcyclist, and discrimination against motorcyclist for not being able to use public, tax-supported property like parking garages. The list goes on.
VABA meets monthly on the 2nd Saturday of every month in Hillsville, VA at 6:00 p.m. We welcome anyone to attend. Remember – together we have a strong voice, but separate we are weak.
We have two planed rides each month during riding season, which are chosen by our members.
Dues in the VABA are $20.00 per person, $30.00 per couple, and $35.00 for the family. Members without a driver's license are considered non-voting members.
